The Strait Family
Hello from Denver!
I have been horrible about updating this blog, but I am finally back at it with this sweet family session from Texas. Before me and my husband dashed off to Colorado for the summer, I got to meet with our friends Chris, Blythe, Keaton and Finley Strait for a golden hour session in The Woodlands. It was a HOT one for sure! We rescheduled initially because the heat index was at 104 when we wanted to meet - too hot, people.
Everything worked out wonderfully though and the sun and shade made for a nice evening photo session. We started with some traditional photos; however, as I will explain below, I love to see my clients laughing and having a good time. I like to allow for organic interactions between family members by asking questions like "who is the funny one in the family?" When I asked the Strait family, they unanimously agreed that Chris was it.

Besides asking questions, I also like to tell my clients to pretend I am not there. I am a ghost, but a friendly one who wants to snap your photos. The picture below is from that moment. I asked them to laugh and look at each other.
When I started out as a photographer, I started out as a second shooter for weddings. What this meant was that most of the shots I got were the candid shots of people being themselves. Candid photos are some of my favorite because people are unfiltered. They are behaving authentically as they are. I try to achieve this look in my sessions by not only having them pretend I am not there, but also by getting my clients moving. It may feel odd, but moving allows people to be themselves.
The Strait family had no problem with this and I love their smiles in this shot! You can really see each of their individual personalities shining through.

After taking a little stroll, we moved around the park to find where the sun was really coming through the trees to snag some shots with Chris and Blythe and the kids.
Some of my favorite shots during family sessions are those of mom and dad. From the first time I met Chris and Blythe, I could sense how much they cared for each other. I was so excited to be able to capture pictures of the two of them! What's more, is that they had no problem being affectionate! I love working with shy couples who are still a little nervous about PDA, but it is also such a fun time working with couples who have no fear of showing how much they care.
You can't forget about the kids though! I was ecstatic when we stumbled upon this spot in the park where the green from the trees and gold from the sun were perfection so we could snag a couple shots of these two. I don't know if you grew up with siblings, but I did and I can tell you we would have FOUGHT taking a photo together. We did love each other, but we just didn't always like to admit it. However, these two had no qualms as you can see from the picture below.
Finally, as if the evening was perfect enough, we finished our session by literally walking into the sunset.
I had such a wonderful time with this family!
